Wayne Gretzky has faced backlash in recent weeks over his perceived lack of support for Canada—something that has reportedly “broken his heart.” Now, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has publicly come to his defense, saying Gretzky was “choked up” when they spoke a few days ago.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has mocked Canada by suggesting it should become the United States’ 51st state and even claimed that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should be its governor. He has also threatened Canada with tariffs, further escalating tensions between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. During the 4 Nations Face-Off, both fans and players made their stance on the issue clear.
When Team Canada faced Team USA in Montreal, fans at the Cell Centre booed the American anthem—and caught in the middle of it all was Wayne Gretzky. Widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, Gretzky has long been a hero to Canadians. However, his past support for Trump, including attending his inauguration and election victory party, has drawn criticism. And during the 4 Nations tournament, as a panelist for TNT, he remained silent on Trump’s controversial remarks.
Doug Ford defends Wayne Gretzky
Amid growing criticism, Bobby Orr defended Gretzky in an op-ed for the Toronto Sun, while Gretzky’s wife, Janet, also spoke out in support, saying the backlash has left Wayne “heartbroken.”
On Tuesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford also defended Gretzky during a press conference originally intended to address tariffs and sanctions against the U.S. Seizing the opportunity to support The Great One, Ford made his stance clear.
“One other thing I want to mention is my friend Wayne Gretzky,” Ford said. “He’s the most patriotic Canadian there is anywhere on the planet. Other Canadian athletes go down to the U.S., hand in their Canadian passport, and get an American one to pay lower taxes.”
“I talked to Wayne the other day—he was so choked up. He’s a patriot, he loves Canada, and he never gave up his Canadian passport. So, folks, give the guy a break. Just give him a break. He loves Canada. He loves it like no tomorrow.”
Wayne Gretzky has yet to speak publicly about the criticism or his friendship with Trump. However, Trump has claimed that Gretzky does not want to openly oppose Canada becoming the 51st state out of loyalty to their friendship.
