The wildest things can happen in hockey. This weekend, a bizarre incident took place in the Russian first-tier KHL, leaving fans, players, and officials completely stunned. Many claimed they’d never seen anything like it.
We live in a society where many can’t do without their phones. But to actually take it with you on the ice during a professional game of hockey is taking it a bit too far.
Nikita Dynyak, a forward for the Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL, has gone viral because of an embarrassing incident in this weekend’s game against Avangard. Suddenly, the game was stopped by officials who were seen picking up a phone from the ice and returning it to the Ak Bars bench.
KHL player loses phone on the ice
Players looked puzzled when Dynyak confessed that it was his phone, and after receiving it from the officials, he quickly dropped it again. In the replays, the phone was seen dropping from his pants onto the ice as he made a play to collect the puck.
The video quickly went viral on social media, especially after the official Spittin’ Chiclets account posted it on X, formerly Twitter.
“That’s a first,” Spittin’ Chiclets wrote on X, followed with a laughing emoji.
Explains what really happened
Avangard head coach Guy Boucher, a former NHL head coach, tried to get officials to assess a penalty for illegal equipment, but the officials decided against it, and the game continued without any penalties being called. According to Dynyak himself, the phone ended up in his pants due to an unfortunate accident.
“I had it on the shelf behind me, I put it down, took off my elbow pads and when I turned around, the phone fell behind me,” Dynyak said via the X account Hockey News Hub.
“I didn’t feel anything. Like putting a cigarette behind your ear and not feeling it,” he added. “I went out and didn’t understand anything at first. This is a very funny situation, though maybe a bit embarrassing.
“There will be a new meme … I hope the league will take pity on me, it was a pure accident.”
The KHL has announced that Dynyak won’t face any punishment for the bizarre incident. He did, however, get into a fight with Michael McLeod during the game, for which he was suspended one game.
