Canadian teams have been booing the American anthem for weeks, and it doesn’t look like it will stop anytime soon. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has now addressed the controversy in the media, sending a clear message to those affected by it.
It all started weeks ago when President Donald Trump began threatening Canada with tariffs. In response, Canadian sports fans have made their stance clear by booing the American national anthem whenever Canadian teams face American opponents.
By the time the 4 Nations Face-Off began, Trump had escalated tensions by suggesting that Canada should become the United States’ 51st state—with Justin Trudeau as its Governor. Relations between the two countries are at an all-time high, and numerous NHL players have voiced their support for either Canada or the United States. But one thing is certain: the anthem protests aren’t ending anytime soon.
Justin Trudeau on the booing
As it turns out, they have the full support of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who sent a direct message to both Canadians and Americans on Tuesday: “We’re going to keep booing the American anthem.”
Trudeau then elaborated on why Canadians are booing and why it won’t stop anytime soon.
“But let me tell Americans—we’re not booing you,” Trudeau said. ”We’re not booing your teams. We’re not booing your players. We’re booing a policy that’s designed to hurt us. We’re insulted, we’re angry, but we’re Canadian. And that means we’re going to stand up for each other. We’re going to fight, and we’re going to win.”
