Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets are a professional hockey team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Founded as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1997, they began playing in the NHL during the 1999-2000 season before relocating to Winnipeg in 2011. They play their home games at Canada Life Centre and compete in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The franchise has yet to win a Stanley Cup championship.

Winnipeg Jets History

The original Winnipeg Jets played in the WHA from 1972 to 1979 before being absorbed into the NHL. However, in 1996, the team was sold and relocated to Arizona, becoming the Phoenix Coyotes. In 1997, Atlanta was awarded an expansion franchise, and the Thrashers played for 12 seasons before relocating to Winnipeg in 2011. Since rejoining the NHL as the Jets for the 2011-12 season, the team has yet to win a Stanley Cup or reach the Stanley Cup Final.

The ‘new’ Winnipeg Jets have not retired any numbers as of early 2025. However, the original Jets franchise (now the Arizona Coyotes) previously retired two numbers. The Coyotes also continue to honor the numbers of former Jets greats, including Bobby Hull, Dale Hawerchuk, and Thomas Steen.
