The Boston Bruins’ players must have thought that Tuukka Rask had lost his mind on Wednesday night, facing the New York Rangers. With just a minute to go, the goaltender all of the sudden left his goal and started skating towards the Bruins’ bench for an extra attacker.
The problem? The game was tied 2-2. Rasks’ teammates quickly realized something was wrong, waving to Rask for him to return to the net.
Fortunately for the Bruins, they kept possession and Rangers never got hold of the puck, and never got close to the empty net.
Afterwards, Tuukka Rask confessed to the media what just happened.
“I honestly thought we were down 2-1,” he said.
“I was waiting for (coach Bruce Cassidy) to wave me over there. I’m thinking, ‘Why the heck is he not? There’s like a minute and a half left.’ He’s not waving me, so I decided to come over when we had the puck.”
The Bruins’ won the game in overtime, and Rask was in a good mood afterwards, despite his inexplicable mistake.
“Hey, it’s an entertainment industry,” he said.
“And that’s what we’re trying to provide, entertainment for the fans. I’m sure people were shocked at first, but hopefully they got a good laugh out of that.”
