All of Washington is holding its breath right now, as Alex Ovechkin was forced to leave the game against Utah HC with an injury. Unsurprisingly, Tom Wilson retaliated with haymakers on Jake McBain. But that wasn’t Wilson’s only fight of the night—he also had a scrap with Lawson Crouse, and what he did in the penalty box has fans buzzing.
Alex Ovechkin is on the hunt for Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. He’s been in astonishing form to start the 2024–25 campaign, scoring his 14th and 15th goals of the season on Monday against Utah.
Ovechkin was on hat-trick watch when he was forced to leave the game after an awkward knee-on-knee collision with Jack McBain. Tom Wilson wasn’t about to let McBain off the hook for injuring his captain. With just over three minutes left in the game, Wilson dropped the gloves.
Tom Wilson in big fight
McBain didn’t back down, and the two exchanged heavy punches before Wilson landed a big one to McBain’s face, prompting the officials to step in. But that wasn’t the only fight Wilson had in store.
Earlier in the game, with the Capitals leading 4–2 late in the second period, Wilson squared off with Lawson Crouse. Even after getting Crouse down to the ice, Wilson threw a few extra punches before the referees stepped in and sent both players to the penalty box.
But Wilson wasn’t finished.
While serving his penalty, Wilson and Crouse exchanged heated words, with Wilson taunting Crouse by throwing mock punches in the air. The tension between the two was palpable, and it looked like they might go at it again right there in the box. Ultimately, Wilson had to wait over 20 game minutes to drop the gloves again—this time with Jack McBain. Talk about sticking up for your captain!
