It doesn’t look like the Pittsburgh Penguins will be playing in the 2024-25 Stanley Cup Playoffs. But Sidney Crosby is, yet again, having a tremendous season. On Tuesday, he even surpassed Wayne Gretzky on a notable NHL all-time list—an achievement that deserves all the praise in the world.
The Penguins won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, but since then, things haven’t come as easily. They haven’t won a single playoff round since 2018 and are on the verge of missing the postseason for a second straight year. Breaking that drought won’t be easy.
Still, despite another disappointing regular season for Pittsburgh, one thing is certain: Sidney Crosby remains an elite player. Even as he approaches his 38th birthday, he continues to prove week in and week out that he’s among the league’s best. Crosby is currently on pace for 87 points this season, an impressive feat considering the team’s struggles. And on Tuesday, he added another incredible milestone to his résumé—passing The Great One on one particular all-time list.
Sidney Crosby passes Wayne Gretzky
Crosby found the back of the net with 15 seconds left in the first period against the New York Islanders, recording his 1,670th career point. With that, he took sole possession of fourth place on the all-time list for points with a single team.
Now in his 20th NHL season, Crosby has spent his entire career with the Penguins, winning three Stanley Cups. Meanwhile, Wayne Gretzky put up 1,669 points with the Oilers in just 696 games over nine seasons before his infamous trade to the LA Kings. Crosby still trails Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, and Gordie Howe on the all-time list for points with one franchise.
However, after signing a two-year extension earlier this season that keeps him in Pittsburgh through 2026-27, he’s within striking distance of another major milestone. Sitting 139 points shy of Howe’s 1,809 with the Red Wings, it’s not out of the question that Crosby could take over the top spot before he calls it a career.
