In December last year, San Jose’s Mario Ferraro was trying to clear the puck out of his zone, but suddenly the puck stopped, not because a player was in the way, but because a referee was. The referee Michael Markovic had to leave the game after getting hit in the head and suffered a broken jaw on the play.
He was the third referee in recent years to have his jaw broken on the ice, and it almost happened again last night.
Tampa Bay Lightnings goalkeeper Andrei Vasilevskiy was trying to clear the puck, and suddenly a very loud and clear “oh my God!” sounded over the arena. The scream came in total fear from the referee Michael Markovic, who screamed it just as the puck went past his head.
With just a month passing since he got his jaw broken by a puck, who can blame him? Luckily, the puck went right by and out of the zone.
