The Washington Capitals are one of the biggest surprises of the 2024-25 season. They lead the Eastern Conference, and much of that success is thanks to Logan Thompson. But now, the truth behind why the star goalie was snubbed from Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster has been revealed—leaving fans stunned.
The Capitals are red-hot, with players like Dylan Strome, Tom Wilson, and Alex Ovechkin playing some of the best hockey of their careers. Yet, despite their dominance, not a single Capitals player was selected for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.
The biggest shock? Logan Thompson was left off Team Canada’s goalie roster. Instead, Canada opted for Adin Hill, Samuel Montembeault, and Jordan Binnington—even though Thompson, a Vezina-caliber performer this season, has a higher save percentage.
Reason behind snub of Logan Thompson
In fact, only Connor Hellebuyck has a lower GAA than Thompson, and the two also top the league in save percentage. Many have speculated about the real reason behind Thompson’s omission. On Wednesday, former NHL goalie Steve Valiquette suggested that it may have been due to Team Canada’s assistant coaches, Bruce Cassidy and Pete DeBoer. Both coached Thompson during their respective tenures with the Golden Knights—and apparently, they’re not fans.
“I don’t think Cassidy and DeBoer were going to have it,” Valiquette said on the Real Kyper & Bourne show on Sportsnet. “I think it was (personalities at the top). They didn’t have a great experience with him in Vegas.
“There were times they wanted him to play, and he wasn’t available. I know a little bit about what happened there, and I can’t get into it,” Valiquette added. “It was never going to happen.”
