At 39 years old, Alexander Ovechkin is putting up elite numbers in the NHL. He’s started the season with seven goals and seven assists in 11 games and is currently on pace to score 52 goals this season.
If he can maintain this scoring rate, he’ll break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record this season. On Sunday, against the Carolina Hurricanes, he scored the 860th goal of his career.
The Russian superstar is now only 34 goals away from catching The Great One, and his goal on Sunday was classic Ovie.

The Capitals had a two-man advantage late in the first period when Ovechkin, positioned in his signature spot, fired a one-timer past Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov.
After scoring, he appeared to pump his fist and yell something at his fellow Russian in the Canes’ goal.

After the game, which the Hurricanes won 4-2, Kochetkov was asked about what Ovechkin had said to him after the goal, and the goalie’s response was absolutely hilarious.
“Yeah, yeah,” Kochetkov said, confirming the interaction. “Every time, he tells me lots of bad words. He scores on me, ‘I score on you! I score on you!’ All Russians do this. It’s no problem for me.”
Kochetkov, forced into a more regular starting role with Frederik Andersen injured, made 19 saves in the game. The Russian goalie is now 5-1 on the season, with a 2.61 GAA and a .893 save percentage.
