There have been many Swedes in the NHL over the years, but few have made a mark like Peter Forsberg.
He’s still considered one of the best players of all time when he was at his best, and if it weren’t for injuries, his Hall of Fame career would have been even more legendary.
Forsberg won two Stanley Cups and recorded an impressive 885 points in 708 games in the NHL.
He also broke an incredible NHL record during the 2002-03 season, which will be very tough to beat.
Forsberg actually had no idea he held the record that he broke during a season that started poorly for him.
”I missed a number of games due to an injury, and I wasn’t happy with my skating in the start of that season. When I was injured, I started testing skates from another brand, and suddenly, everything felt great. I felt like a king on the ice,” Forsberg told Swedish newspaper Expressen.
Forsberg’s line with Milan Hejduk and Alex Tanguay was unstoppable.
”It felt like we never left the offensive zone. We had great IQ all three of us. Hejduk scored 50 goals that winter, and Tanguay was incredibly smart and could do just about it all,” Forsberg said.
The Forsberg-Hejduk-Tanguay recorded a whopping 271 points that season. But that wasn’t the record.
Peter Forsberg ended up leading the league in points after being 32 points behind at one point during the season. No one in NHL history has ever caught up so many points to win the point-scoring race.
Mario Lemieux is second on the list with 23 points. Peter Forsberg had no idea about his record.
”I must’ve scored like 90 points in my last 50 games. I had no idea it was such a gap. It’s pretty funny,” he said.
