Paul Bissonnette slams the Oilers for not signing Philip Broberg

Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway are lighting it up with the St. Louis Blues. Now, NHL analyst and podcast host Paul Bissonnette shares his true feelings about the Edmonton Oilers letting them leave in the summer of 2024—and he doesn’t hold back.

Offer sheets aren’t used often in the NHL, but whenever they are, they spark debate and controversy. This past summer, fresh off the Oilers’ Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers, the St. Louis Blues extended offer sheets to Broberg and Holloway. Both had played key roles in Edmonton’s playoff run, yet the Oilers chose not to match the offers.

Broberg, a 23-year-old defenseman, signed a two-year, $9,131,834 contract, while Holloway, a 23-year-old forward, signed a two-year, $4,590,914 deal with the Blues. At the time, few Oilers fans were devastated by the front office’s decision, but now, many are starting to see it differently.

Paul Bissonnette slams the Oilers

With both players thriving in St. Louis, Bissonnette didn’t hold back on a recent episode of Spittin’ Chiclets, slamming the Oilers for letting them walk—especially Broberg, whom he compared to star defenseman Evan Bouchard.
“Look, Broberg was their best defenseman in the Finals against Florida,” Bissonnette said. “I thought he was better overall than Bouchard. Okay, say he wasn’t—but to me, that was such a huge fumble. They got older, smaller, and slower.”

Bissonnette also pointed out other key departures from the Oilers’ roster despite their deep playoff run.
“Skinner has played well over the last couple of games, but we’re talking about McLeod, Foegele, Holloway, Broberg—aren’t all these guys around 6’2″, 200 pounds or more? What the hell is going on? Why would you want that much turnover on a team that just took you to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final?” Bissonnette said.
