William Nylander scored two goals to give the Toronto Maple Leafs the win in Game 6 against the Boston Bruins, but if it was one pivotal moment in the game, it happened just ten seconds before Nylander’s first goal.
The Bruins would’ve eliminated the Leafs if they’d won on Thursday, and in the second period, with the game still tied 0-0, they thought they would get a chance to play on the power play.
Mason Lohrei was hit from behind by Toronto forward Pontus Holmberg, and he was slammed against the board as a result.
The hit from behind happened just in front of the referee’s eyes, but he didn’t call a penalty.
Everyone on social media agreed that Holmberg should’ve been called on a boarding penalty, but instead, play went on, and Boston committed an unforced icing.
The Bruins couldn’t change their personnel, and they lost the ensuing faceoff. William Nylander scored with just a minute left of the middle frame.
It was a crucial moment in the game, and fans absolutely slammed the referees for not calling a penalty on Holmberg. But NHL Paul Bissonnette thought otherwise.
In the TNT broadcast, Biz, according to his podcast Ryan Whitney, said it was a ’flop’ by Lohrei. And he got absolutely destroyed on social media for the take.
”Buddy somehow got CTE despite only playing 12 seconds a game,” one user said.
”Truly one of the most astounding things ever said on national TV,” another said.
”Well Biz is dreaming. They could have called holding and then boarding,” a third added.
