An NHL referee gave every player on the ice a penalty—and he had just had enough of them. Now, he’s going viral for one of the most hilarious penalty calls we’ve seen this year.
One of the best things about the NHL is the big fights. Games are always tight and intense, but sometimes, a good scrap or a scrum can help relieve the tension on the ice.
That was on full display Wednesday during the game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres currently have a 0% odds of making the playoffs, while the Red Wings are battling for a wild card spot. But despite their standings, the game had a real postseason vibe, and in the third period, things got out of hand.
NHL referee’s hilarious call
Both teams engaged in a massive scrum late in the game, and the referee wasn’t messing around when handing out penalties. On the hot mic, announcing the calls to the fans, he started with:
“77 for Detroit’s gonna have a minor for roughing.”
Then, he dropped a line that had everyone—fans in attendance and even the announcers—laughing.
“And alllllll the other guys are gonna have a misconduct,” he said.
With five players from each team sent to the penalty box, the Sabres’ bench looked hilariously empty—almost like something out of a beer league game.
