Rob Ray just can’t catch a break. Last week, he was struck in the face with a puck—for the second time in as many seasons. Now, it turns out the Sabres’ bench was mic’d up at the moment, and the video of it all is absolutely hilarious.
Ray was one of the top enforcers for the Sabres and remains the franchise leader in penalty minutes. After his playing career, he transitioned into broadcasting and is now a beloved rink-side reporter during Buffalo Sabres games.
He brings his NHL expertise to viewers by getting up close to the action between the benches. But being that close to the ice—and all the chaos that comes with it—has its risks.
Last year, Rob Ray took a puck to the face but, after dropping a massive F-bomb on the broadcast, returned to his normal commentating. Media members rarely get injured during games, but unfortunately for Ray, it happened again earlier this week.
Rob Ray struck in the face with puck
During a Sabres game against the Anaheim Ducks, Rob Ray once again found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. This time, the puck struck him just above the eye, prompting yet another loud F-bomb. In response, Ray opted to sit in the nosebleeds for the Sabres’ next game.
Now, a new and hilarious video of the incident has surfaced, revealing that the Sabres’ bench was mic’d up at the time. Head coach Lindy Ruff couldn’t believe it had happened again.
“Did he get hit in the head again?” Ruff asked. “You can’t miss that.”
Tage Thompson also chimed in with a hilarious comment:
“Can we swap out those pucks? That one might be f—king dented,” he said.
