Matthew Knies’ seven-word response on Alex Ovechkin’s record

Alex Ovechkin is officially the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history, and the entire hockey world is standing up to applaud the incredible feat. When Toronto Maple Leafs’ young star Matthew Knies was asked about the record, he had everyone laughing with a hilarious seven-word response.

It’s been the talk of the NHL all season: will Alex Ovechkin, one of the modern era’s biggest superstars, catch Wayne Gretzky’s seemingly unbreakable goal record of 894? Many thought it would stand forever, but Ovechkin has performed at an absolutely unreal level throughout his entire career—and at age 39, he’s shown no signs of slowing down.

“The Great Eight” scored two goals against the Chicago Blackhawks this past weekend to tie the record, with Gretzky in attendance. Then, against the New York Islanders on Sunday, Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal to officially claim the No. 1 spot on the all-time goal list. Since then, the hockey world has been buzzing with praise, congratulations, and admiration for the historic milestone.

Knies’ hilarious words on Alex Ovechkin

But when Matthew Knies—playing in just his second NHL season—was asked about it, he delivered the most perfectly funny tribute imaginable.
”I can’t even count that high,” he said, per the Toronto Sun’s Terry Koshan.

Knies did expand on his thoughts about the record and the electric atmosphere that followed, including Ovechkin’s trademark belly slide celebration and the team’s ecstatic swarm at center ice.
“It’s pretty incredible… it’s astonishing. It was fun to watch the celebration after and how the crowd got into it in an away game—it was pretty cool,” Knies said.
