The New York Islanders haven’t achieved the result they hoped for since Patrick Roy took over as head coach a year ago. During Monday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, star forward Mathew Barzal appeared to take a huge dig at his own fans while talking with a teammate. The moment immediately went viral on social media.
January 20 marked one year since Patrick Roy took over behind the bench as head coach for the New York Islanders. His appointment had an immediate impact, leading the Islanders to the playoffs, though they were eliminated in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Mathew Barzal’s apparent dig at his own fans
Expectations were high for the Islanders to continue improving during the 2024-25 season, but the team is currently ranked last in the Metropolitan Division. Despite some tough breaks with injuries, it has been a disappointing showing so far, and Mathew Barzal doesn’t seem too thrilled about the team’s situation.
Footage showed star forward Mathew Barzal sitting on the bench during Monday’s game against the Blue Jackets, talking to a teammate and reportedly saying something about the UBS Arena being empty. According to Rob Taub, a digital content producer, Barzal’s exact words were: “This place is f—king empty. F—king empty. F—king joke, bro.”
Many seemed to agree that Barzal appeared to say those exact words.
