Martin Brodeur sees Alex Ovechkin scoring 1,000 NHL goals

Alex Ovechkin has officially broken Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal-scoring record. Now, everyone’s wondering: what’s next? Martin Brodeur, one of the most legendary goalies of all time, is sharing his thoughts on Ovechkin’s future—and he doesn’t hold back.

Ovechkin officially tied Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history this past weekend, scoring two against the Chicago Blackhawks. The celebrations were wild, but it didn’t take long for the Russian legend to claim the No. 1 spot. With his 895th career goal against the Islanders, Ovechkin surpassed Gretzky and rewrote hockey history. But now, the question looms: what’s coming next?

The 39-year-old Capitals forward’s contract expires after next season, meaning he still has plenty of time to push the number even higher—possibly past the 900-goal mark. And given how he’s been playing all year, there’s little reason to worry about how long he can keep going. Despite suffering a broken leg early in the 2024–25 season, he’s already scored more than 40 goals.

Brodeur on Alex Ovechkin’s future

He’s got at least 82 regular-season games left in him—but could he sign an extension? And just how high can he raise the bar?
“The guy can play as long as he wants,” St. Louis Blues center Brayden Schenn told NHL.com. “That could be a thousand goals after he’s done, you know what I mean? That’s obviously going to be up to him—how long he wants to play—but he’s still a special talent.”

Martin Brodeur, widely regarded as the greatest goalie in hockey history, still has big expectations. When asked about Ovechkin’s future, he didn’t rule out the 1,000-goal mark.
“The sky’s the limit for him,” said Brodeur. “If he keeps playing, and the Capitals are a good team—and they’re going to be good for a while with the players they have—I would love to see him try to get to 1,000. That would be crazy.”
