Jeremy Roenick scared a teammate to jump through a window

Jeremy Roenick is a Hall of Famer with over 1,300 NHL games and 1,216 points in a career that spanned more than three decades. But he was also known as a hilarious teammate—like the time he scared fellow San Jose Shark Torrey Mitchell so badly that Mitchell jumped through a window.

Torrey Mitchell played in the NHL for eleven years, representing the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and the Los Angeles Kings. But it was during his stint in San Jose in 2008 that his teammate, future Hall of Famer Jeremy Roenick, pulled a prank so intense it sent Mitchell flying out of a window.

Jeremy Roenick prank Torrey Mitchell

Back in 2008, Roenick, Mitchell, and Devin Setoguchi—then teammates on the San Jose Sharks—went to Las Vegas on a boys’ trip, Mitchell told the French outlet La Presse in 2016. While playing cards at a casino, the three players were approached by a man who invited them to a private party. They all agreed and jumped into a limousine.
Eventually, the limo pulled up to a large mansion. Mitchell was only 23 at the time, and Setoguchi was just 21. The two youngsters felt uneasy about attending a party at a strange mansion outside of Las Vegas, but the 38-year-old Roenick reassured them that everything would probably be fine once they got inside.
Inside the mansion, the other guests gave the NHL stars strange looks and whispered among themselves.
“They made us put on jackets, then they made us sit in a large room. There were about thirty people talking quietly to each other, and there was strange music. The atmosphere was really weird,” Roenick recalled.

Jumped through a window

After a while, a woman wearing nothing but her underwear walked by, unsettling the two younger players even more. That’s when Roenick headed for the door—but before he could reach it, a security guard grabbed him and appeared to stab him several times.
Torrey Mitchell and Devin Setoguchi were understandably terrified. Seeing their teammate getting stabbed, Mitchell panicked, ran toward a small window, and jumped right through it. After landing on a lawn, he sprinted away from the property as fast as he could.

The perfect prank

A few minutes later, Mitchell’s phone started ringing nonstop. When he finally answered, it was Jeremy Roenick—laughing hysterically.
As it turned out, Roenick had just pulled off the prank of the century. He had hired people from the TV show Scare Tactics—actors, set, house, everything—to stage the entire horrifying scenario. His goal? To scare his younger teammates—and even the general manager of the Sharks.
“My GM didn’t like it that much,” Roenick said on the Empty Netters podcast in 2023.
“He would’ve liked it a lot more if Torrey didn’t jump out of a window. But he survived. He was fine—just shaken for a couple of days. But we all laughed.”
Quite a prank, huh? You can watch Jeremy Roenick tell the full story in the clip below.
