Connor McDavid is widely regarded as the greatest hockey player in the world. Early in 2025, he surpassed Jari Kurri for second place in all-time points in Edmonton history—and the Finnish legend now has the funniest thing to say about it.
McDavid has been lighting up the NHL for quite some time now. Since being selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, he’s dominated with highlight-reel goals, breathtaking dekes, and a whole lot of points. In a game against the Minnesota Wild early in 2025, McDavid recorded two goals and an assist in a 5-3 win.
That performance didn’t just help the Oilers secure another victory; it also meant he passed the Finnish legend Jari Kurri for second in all-time points in Edmonton history. McDavid, who’s won three Hart Trophies in his career, recorded his 1,044th point in that game, putting him only behind Wayne Gretzky on the all-time franchise list.
Connor McDavid passed Jari Kurri
Kurri scored 1,043 points during his 10 years with the Oilers, often playing on the same line as Wayne Gretzky. McDavid’s teammates and coaches were in awe of his remarkable feat.
“For him to climb the scoring list as quickly as he has, within an organization that has had so many significant players, is incredible,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. “I’ve seen so many remarkable things from him. He’s a tremendous player and a great teammate. I said I wouldn’t be surprised anymore, just because he surprises you so often over the years, but it’s a nice achievement for him. The guys are very proud of him.”
Jari Kurri’s hilarious words
But Kurri was equally impressed. The Hockey Beast spoke with the Finnish legend ahead of an NHL alumni game and asked for his thoughts on McDavid—particularly about the superstar breaking his all-time points record. Kurri delivered the most hilarious response.
“No surprise,” Kurri told The Hockey Beast. “We all know what kind of player he is. I was more surprised I was still second,” he added with a laugh. “He’s a great player to watch. So much fun to watch, and the way he plays.”
