Jakob Chychrun has been among the NHL’s best young players for years. He was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, made his debut the same year, and recorded 20 points in his first season.
Since then, Chychrun has continued to improve, but at the exact times, it’s been clear his future wasn’t meant to be in Arizona.
He wanted out, and the Coyotes didn’t see a problem trading him away, but it took way longer than many expected. It took until earlier this month for Chychrun to finally leave Arizona, and many were surprised that his next destination was the Ottawa Senators.
Many teams were interested in Jakob Chychrun, but the talented defensemen eventually ended up in Ottawa, and it’s easy to assume that family played a big part in that decision.

Jakob’s sister lives in Ottawa, and so does his grandfather John. It definitely played a big role in Jakob’s decision, and when he scored his first goal for the Ottawa Senators this weekend, it wasn’t any doubt how much it meant for him.
Chychrun scored a beautiful goal to make it 4-1 for the Senators against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jakob’s grandfather was in the stands as the young defenseman scored his first goal in Ottawa.
After the game, Chychrun was shown a video of his family reacting to his goal, and it was such an emotional moment.
”You guys are going to make me tear up,” he said.
Chychrun is already on his way to becoming a huge fan favorite in Ottawa, and this was definitely a moment that fans would remember for a long time.
