Hilarious offer to referees after Montreal Canadiens shootout loss

The Chicago Blackhawks won the shootout against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday—but it wasn’t without controversy. The officials somehow missed a perfectly good goal, and now, an ophthalmology company is going viral with a hilarious offer to the referees.

Sixty minutes of regulation weren’t enough to separate the Montreal Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks in Monday’s regular-season game in Montreal. The game went to a shootout, where controversy took center stage—courtesy of the referees on the ice.

For the Blackhawks’ first attempt, forward Frank Nazar stepped up. Moments later, he found himself at the heart of a huge controversy—but not because of anything he did wrong.

Nazar got the puck past Habs goalie Samuel Montembeault and into the net, but it seemed to vanish into thin air. The officials believed the puck had gone out of play and ruled the attempt no goal. The shootout continued, with Patrick Laine taking the next attempt for the Canadiens. Laine missed—and then, suddenly, the officials headed to the replay booth.

Hilarious offer after Montreal Canadiens loss

The league had alerted them that Nazar’s attempt had, in fact, gone into the net. It was a good goal. The Canadiens were furious. They had already made two attempts, and suddenly, the Blackhawks’ first was retroactively counted. It’s unclear whether they would’ve made a different choice—perhaps sending out another shooter instead of Laine—if they had known Chicago had scored. Regardless, it was an embarrassing look for the officials, who somehow missed such an obvious goal from just feet away. And now, an ophthalmology company has decided to poke fun at them.

When Elliotte Friedman explained what had happened in a post on X, LASIK.com jumped in with the perfect response.
“Better vision. Better calls. Yes, we’re literally offering all NHL refs free LASIK,” they wrote.

The post quickly went viral in the hockey world—and you’ve got to hand it to them: what a hilarious marketing campaign!
