The Toronto Maple Leafs won a playoff series for the first time in 20 years, as they eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. Toronto was buzzing, and they couldn’t be happier about their opponent in the second round.
The Boston Bruins were huge favorites to win their first-round series against the Florida Panthers. They came from a record-breaking regular season, where they broke new records in wins and points.
When that series was tied 3-3, Toronto fans made their wishes clear as they sang chants about wanting the Panthers rather than the Bruins.
And they got what they asked for. But during the second-round series against the Comeback Cats, Toronto’s core 4 went missing. Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner simply didn’t show up.
As the four superstars all struggled to make a mark in the series, the Toronto Maple Leafs were eliminated.

Many have slammed the Big 4 for their performance, and now, there are huge speculations about how the future will look for the Maple Leafs roster. Auston Matthews is in a contract year, but he’s stated that he sees himself in Toronto in the future as well.
But many suggest that the Maple Leafs need to do something with the team, and now, former NHLer John Scott absolutely slams Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, and Marner, as well as the Toronto media.
”Remember how harsh the Toronto media was on guys like Phaneuf and Kessel
Every day it was, ’Why aren’t YOU playing better? Why aren’t YOU scoring more? Why isn’t the team winning more games?’
If I’m them, I’m wondering why the guys now are getting a pass…” He said on Twitter.
John Scott claims that the narrative needs to change and that the star players should receive different questions.
”Matthews, Marner, Rielly, and Nylander are getting questions like, ’Do you wanna stay in Toronto? Is this the group? What are your feelings?’
The only question that should be asked is this: ’This group has had 7 playoff exits in a row… Why do YOU still deserve to be here?”
