The final detail of the Matt Duchene/Kyle Turris trade

After 18 months of speculation and rumors, Matt Duchene has officially been dealt out of Colorado. The 26-year-old Haliburton, Ont. native was clear his time in Colorado would end soon, and the saga has finally concluded.

The two biggest names involved in the three-team (Ottawa, Colorado, Nashville) trade yesterday evening were Duchene and Senators’ forward Kyle Turris. The Predators were looking for a Centre and Turris fit the bill. Colorado received prospects, draft picks and AHL/NHL goaltender Andrew Hammond.

Colorado knew that if they were to deal their top star, the trade would need to be enticing. The Avs’ received a 2018 first-round pick from Ottawa that is top-10 protected. If the Senators fall inside the top ten, Ottawa has the option to keep the pick. If they do, the pick then becomes a 2019 1st round selection no matter what.

Colorado will end up with a first-round pick from Ottawa, we just need to wait and see if the selection will be in 2018 or 2019. Either way, it’s clear the Avalanche received a good haul for their disgruntled star.
