Fans are starting to grow tired of the goalie interference calls in the NHL. Last night, many believed that the Carolina Hurricanes were robbed of a good goal after a successful coaching challenge by the Winnipeg Jets.
Officiating is always a topic of discussion in the NHL. Every decision the referees make gets scrutinized by fans, and nothing sparks debate quite like a goalie interference call. And this season, there have been plenty.
In a tight game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, the Hurricanes got the chance to play on a power play in the first period, and they were certain they had scored the first goal of the game.
Carolina Hurricanes’ disallowed goal
Jackson Blake put the puck in the net, but after a short delay, the Winnipeg Jets decided to challenge the goal for goalie interference. After review, the officials disallowed the goal.
Mikko Rantanen was in the crease just before the puck was shot, and he made contact with Eric Comrie’s right pad with his stick. But fans on social media were furious about the call, despite Rantanen clearly taking Comrie’s stick with him as he skated through.
“What even is goaltender interference?” one said.
“Might as well go back to old player-in-the-crease rules,” another said.
“Call me crazy, but it looks like goalies are pushing into players a bit to get the call?” a third added.
“Clear GI, can’t be breathing near the goalie like that,” a fourth said.
