Matt Rempe has been involved in plenty of controversial incidents during his NHL career, but on Thursday, he was wrongfully called for an interference penalty—and fans were absolutely furious, with many claiming officials are targeting the big man.
The New York Rangers are on a mission to reach the playoffs, and every win is crucial at this stage. They managed to pull off a 3-2 overtime victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, but fans still had plenty to be angry about—and, as usual, Matt Rempe was at the center of attention.
The big forward has earned a reputation for delivering high hits in his NHL career, and he always brings a physical presence to the ice every time he plays. But on Thursday, he was wrongly penalized when officials made a terrible interference call against him.
Fans furious after penalty call on Matt Rempe
Early in the third period, Rempe was sent to the box for an interference penalty on the Wild’s Devin Shore. However, upon review, it was clear that Shore skated straight into Rempe before falling to the ice. Rempe didn’t initiate any contact, yet the officials still raised their arms.
On social media, fans were furious about the call, with many arguing that officials are deliberately targeting Rempe. While he has delivered big—and sometimes dangerous—hits earlier in his career, many believe he’s now being punished more often than he should be because of his reputation.
