Being a backup goalie in the NHL is a special task, especially if you’re backing up the best goalie in the league. But the Winnipeg Jets’ Eric Comrie is doing a great job, and now, a video of him being mic’d up during a game has made the rounds on social media, with everyone absolutely loving his positive attitude.
Connor Hellebuyck is arguably the best goalie in the world. After last season, he was awarded his second Vezina Trophy as the league’s top keeper. And he’s started the 2024-25 campaign in the same fashion.
So far, Hellebuyck leads the NHL in GAA (2.00), save percentage (.927), and games played. Being a backup goalie in the NHL is generally a very tough job. You don’t get as many games as the regular goalie, but you’re still expected to do a great job whenever you get the chance to play. Being the backup for Hellebuyck is a particularly tough job. But Eric Comrie has embraced the challenge and is thriving.
Fans love the video of Eric Comrie
Comrie has played 12 games this season and has a save percentage of .905. He happened to be mic’d up during a game a couple of weeks ago, and it was amazing to see how he behaved before and during the game. Fans were amazed at the positive vibes he spread in the locker room before the game despite not being a starter.
”Dude is all vibes. Comrie is the sort of glue that any room needs,” one user said on social media.
During the game, Comrie had plenty of time to praise Hellebuyck for his goaltending, but he also talked about various random things, like the legendary TV show Deadliest Catch and the music at the arena. Fans on social media loved the unfiltered glimpse into what players really talk about during games.
”Goalies, man…” one said.
”I’ve heard someone describe Comrie as having big Golden Retriever energy. This video pretty much confirms it. Love the guy!” another said.
”The guy’s a beaut,” a third added.
