Theme nights in the NHL are becoming more and more common. But not everyone is a fan of them. Now, iconic goalie Dominik Hasek has absolutely slammed the NHL for one of their theme nights, claiming the league has “gone crazy.”
There has been a lot of controversy regarding some NHL teams’ Pride-themed nights in previous seasons, which eventually led to the NHL even banning players from using rainbow-colored sticks on special Pride nights.
The league was forced to take action after some players refused to wear Pride-themed jerseys, leading to several sitting out warmups where they were supposed to wear them.
In December, the Columbus Blue Jackets will hold a new special-themed night, but it has already sparked outrage among one Hall of Famer.
Dominik Hasek outraged with the NHL
The team recently announced they will hold a “Russian Heritage Night” during their home game against the Washington Capitals. But not everyone is a fan of it.
Dominik Hasek, one of the greatest goalies in hockey history, was quick to slam both the Blue Jackets and the NHL for their upcoming plans.
“The NHL has definitely gone crazy,” Hasek wrote on X. “In addition to its long-term support of the Russian war and Russian crimes in Ukraine, it has come up with a new Russian project.”
Hasek then continued to list various war crimes by Russia from World War II to the present day. He has always been a vocal opponent of Russia’s current occupation of Ukraine, and to finish his post on X, he said:
“This is just a brief overview of Russian actions that the NHL can use in the Columbus–Washington game to better familiarize fans with Russian culture…”
