Devils rookie sensation: The NHL’s Newest ‘Great One’?

Jesper Bratt was a 2016 draft pick (162nd overall) by the New Jersey Devils. The 19-year old forward has played professionally in Sweden and has represented Sweden at the international level. Now, in the NHL, he has also taken down Wayne Gretzky in a statically category.

Over the course of Bratt’s early stint in the NHL, he has recorded 5 points in 2 games. The Great One? He only recorded 4 points in 3 games. I mean, sure, Gretzky had his 99 retired by the entire league and recorded 2857 points over his career, but the achievement Jesper ‘The New Great One’ Bratt has re-writes the record books.

It’s factually correct to state Bratt’s rookie season (over 3 games) was better than Wayne Gretzky’s. Now, I guess I should say that Gretzky went on to record 137 points in 79 games that season, but Bratt is on pace to record 205 points. Also, picking up Bratt in your fantasy league is a no-brainer – he will probably crack the 200-point plateau for the first time since the 1981-1982 season.

We may be comparing apples to oranges – or rookies to legends – but the sky is literally the limit for Bratt. Only time will tell if Bratt is able to win 4 Stanley Cups on top of some unbeatable records and multiple trophies. For now, Bratt can live his life knowing his first 2 games in the NHL were better than Gretzky’s first 3 games.
