The crazy old school fight were everybody was fighting – but no one were penalized

It’s one of the craziest fights in NHL history. Still, no one were penalized or suspended. The reason: There weren’t any referees on the ice when the brawl started.

The NHL sure have had some extraordinary events since the start. What happened about 30 years ago, in a game between the Canadiens and the Flyers, sure fits into those kind of events.

It all started with Claude Lemiux, one of the most hated players in NHL history, wouldn’t listen to the Flyers warning him about what would happen if he continued with his warm-up ritual: shooting the puck in the Flyers empty net.

Flyers goaltender Chico Resch started chasing Lemieux, and soon all hell broke loose. Players who were done warming up came back onto the ice. However, it would take a while before the referees were back.

So how many minutes in the penalty box did both team get after the madness on the ice? Actually none.

“We were afraid something like this would break out, with all of the pre-game nonsense that’s been going on. At the same time, though, there’s nothing in our rule book covering something like this.”, NHL Executive Director of Hockey Operations Jim Gregory explained.
