Brett Hull wasn’t just a great hockey player—he was hilarious, both on and off the ice. A few years ago, he was mic’d up as a coach during the All-Star Game and proved what an absolute comedian he is. At one point, he even took a hilarious dig at none other than Wayne Gretzky.
When Wayne Gretzky visited comedian Theo Von’s popular podcast This Past Weekend, Von—who makes people laugh for a living—asked him who the funniest guy he had ever played with was. Gretzky didn’t need much time to think before naming Brett Hull.
Hull is a Hockey Hall of Famer and the St. Louis Blues’ all-time leading scorer. He’s considered one of the all-time greats, and his cult status in St. Louis hasn’t changed one bit since he retired. Naturally, when St. Louis hosted the All-Star festivities in 2020, Hull was a huge part of it all. He served as one of the coaches for the game, and someone had the brilliant idea to mic him up to capture everything he said to his players, opposing players, and the coaches on the other bench. The result? Pure comedy gold.
Brett Hull’s hilarious chirp at Gretzky
Of course, some profanities and NSFW chirps must have come out of his mouth, but even the NHL’s childproof version was absolutely hilarious. At one point, he told his players that he had never seen a good player use a red stick—only to realize that Ryan O’Reilly was holding a red stick. During the game, he also joked about how terrible he was on breakaways, saying, “I would rather shoot it inside of five guys.”
The highlight of Brett Hull being mic’d up undoubtedly came after his team scored a goal, when he decided to fire back at Wayne Gretzky, who was standing on the other bench. It’s unclear what Gretzky had said to Hull before that moment, but Hull immediately turned to him, laughed, and shouted, “Not so chirpy now, are you, Wayne!?”
