Just two days after Team USA fell to Canada in the championship final of the 4 Nations Face-Off, the NHL resumed. And Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews wasn’t too thrilled about being asked questions about the big game.
The United States won the first matchup against Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off, a game that had everything—big fights, massive hits, and four goals. Team USA came out victorious in Montreal, despite the Canadian crowd booing the American anthem. But Canada got its revenge in the final, played in Boston. Connor McDavid scored the game-winning goal in overtime, receiving a pass from Mitch Marner in the slot and burying the puck past Connor Hellebuyck.
Auston Matthews, captain of Team USA in the tournament, was on the ice for the decisive goal. He made an attempt to reach the puck with his stick but couldn’t quite get there. Instead, McDavid sealed the championship for Canada.
Auston Matthews’ hilarious response
As usual, the Toronto media didn’t hold back when they got their first chance to speak with Matthews after the tournament. Over the weekend, as the Maple Leafs prepared for a game, a reporter asked Matthews directly about his failed attempt to break up the pass to McDavid.
“You came so close to deflecting that pass. Does that haunt you in any way?” the reporter asked.
Matthews didn’t seem too entertained by the question and delivered the most hilariously dry two-word response—a clip that quickly went viral.
“Sure, Kevin,” he said, with a completely unenthusiastic expression.
