Canadian sports fans continue to boo the American national anthem. Earlier this week, American-born superstar Auston Matthews was asked about his thoughts on the matter—and fans loved his snappy response.
Canadian fans are taking a stance against Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs on Canadian imports. In an NBA game this past weekend, as the Toronto Raptors hosted the LA Clippers, loud boos were heard during the American national anthem. And it’s been happening in the NHL as well.
This past weekend, Vancouver and Ottawa fans booed ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ and on Tuesday, Canucks fans yet again loudly booed during the U.S. national anthem. The booing has sparked a big debate in North American sports, especially since Team USA plays Team Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off later in February.
Auston Matthews’ great response
Auston Matthews, superstar center of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was recently named captain of Team USA. Earlier this week, Matthews was inevitably asked about the ongoing situation and the continued booing from Canadian fans. Fans absolutely loved his snappy answer.
“Not to get into politics, but you’re going to get into politics,” Matthews said, smiling. “Well, I’m not going to get into politics, so I’ll take the next question.”
On social media, many sympathized with Auston Matthews regarding his answer.
“He’s not touching that with a 500-foot pole,” one said.
“He wasn’t going to win giving an answer other than this,” another said.
“Matthews is half Mexican, captain of the biggest team in Canada and captain of Team USA. There’s nothing he can say without upsetting someone,” a third added.
“Good for him. Not his responsibility to talk politics,” a fourth added.
