It’s almost certain that any game Auston Matthews’ plays, there will be a dazzling highlight that will impress the world. Wednesday was no different – and it took less than one period.
Matthews potted his 6th goal of the season last night, using the defender (Trevor Daley) as a screen. With bodies out in front of netminder Jimmy Howard, there looked to be no way Matthews would be able to score in that situation.
Still, he barreled in and beat Howard short side, extending the Maple Leafs’ lead by 2. There was a finite amount of net they young forward could use to score with, but he managed to do it. It just shows that even if you think there are no options for Matthews, he’ll just create one. The goal ultimately chased Howard from the net, as he allowed 3 goals on 4 shots.
The Leafs would go on to add another in the period, leading 4-1 after one period of play. Matthews would add an assist to his point total, pushing the puck up to William Nylander, who found the back of the net.
Toronto would go on to win 6-3, improving to an NHL best 6-1 overall.
