The Vancouver Canucks are hoarding Petterssons. After acquiring Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Canucks lined up with three Petterssons on Tuesday—and it led to a hilarious moment from the game’s announcers.
Elias Pettersson is the highest-paid player on the Vancouver Canucks. But he’s not the only Pettersson in Vancouver. He’s not even the only Elias Pettersson on the roster. In the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the Canucks drafted Elias Pettersson, a defenseman from Sweden. This season, he has played a handful of NHL games.
Last week, the Vancouver Canucks also traded for Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson, a defensive-minded D-man with eight NHL seasons under his belt. On Tuesday, he played his second game with his new team, and it led to a hilarious moment from the Vancouver Canucks broadcasting team.
Hilarious comment in Vancouver Canucks game
Just before puck drop, commentator John Shorthouse told viewers that three Petterssons were in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche. He finished it off by saying, “Help me, Dave.”
Dave Tomlinson, the lead color commentator for the Vancouver Canucks’ regional broadcasts on CBC/Sportsnet, quickly responded, “Godspeed, Short.”
On social media, many pointed out that ‘Shorty’ had years of practice with the Sedin twins, but this was on a whole new level of difficulty.
“How does one differentiate the Elias Petterssons during the broadcast? Does he call one Elias Pettersson the Greater and the other Elias Pettersson the Lesser?” one asked.
“Please, god, give us a Pettersson goal assisted by Pettersson and Pettersson,” another said.
