Alex Ovechkin is known as being one of the game’s most prolific goal scorers. Already this season, Ovechkin has dominated on the ice, tallying 7 goals in 3 games played. He is likeable, outgoing and is overall a great personality for the league. With these traits, it’s no surprise that Ovi would have tons of fans.
Ovechkin certainly contributes on the ice, but he is no slouch when it comes to performing away from the rink.
Alex Luey is a minor-hockey player from the Niagara region and was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancer that lives inside the bone. He had part of his leg amputated, but has already returned to the ice. With a new prosthetic, he is re-learning how to skate and play the sport.
He began chemotherapy last Thanksgiving and had the entire community behind him. Alex went for follow up tests in May was declared 100% cancer free. His fight has allowed him to return to the ice.
Alex’s story was featured on Hometown Hockey. After the story was aired, we learned that Alex’s favourite player was none-other than Washington great Alex Ovechkin.
Being the community ambassador that he is, Ovechkin delivered his young fan a special message: “Hi Alex, it’s your buddy Ovi. I hear you’re cancer free. You’re coming to the game in Toronto in November. Can’t wait to meet you. So I’ll see you there soon”
The gesture brought the young Alex to tears, and rightfully so.
Once again, Ovechkin showed how strong and tight-knit the hockey community is.
We hope Alex enjoys the game in November.
