Wayne Gretzky isn’t just the greatest hockey player of all time. Few players have loved the game as much as Wayne, and he still does.
He’s always shown a huge passion for the game’s history, and that’s why it was so special for him to surpass Gordie Howe for the most goals of all time.
If you love hockey history, there’s no better place to be than the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
But if you’re Wayne Gretzky, it can be difficult to just have your ordinary Sunday stroll through memory lane at the HHOF. It’s just hockey fans all around, and everyone knows who Wayne Gretzky is. Well, at least almost everyone.
Some years ago, Gretzky shared a great story about how he went to the Hockey Hall of Fame without anyone noticing it was him, and his visit ended most hilariously.
“A couple of years ago I took my son to the Hall of Fame,” Gretzky said. “He was 11 or 12. I had a hat on. I just told him, ‘Keep your head down.’ We walked around for about two hours, we saw everything there was to see.”
Father and son went on to play an interactive game, in which you shoot pucks at a net.
“My son got out there and he was 4-for-5, and so he said, ‘Dad, try it,'” Gretzky said. “So I said, ‘OK,’ and I got out there and I missed the first three shots I took.
“And the young man who was taking care of the line walked over to me and said, ‘Sir, if you move your hand down the stick a little bit farther…'”
When Gretzky first told this story, at an event at Air Canada Centre, the media erupted in laughter.
“I lifted my hat up and I said, ‘If you go get me one of those pucks that are in there, there’s 802 up there,” Gretzky said. ”My son killed himself laughing, and I got out of there.”
