Patrice Bergeron and his Boston Bruins are off to a tremendous start to the campaign. They currently hold a 14-2-0 record, first in the Atlantic Division. The Bruins won this weekend’s matchup against the Buffalo Sabres, and Bergeron had a big part in the W as he scored two goals. But something else caught the fans’ attention during the game.
Before puck drop at KeyBank Center, Bergeron approached Buffalo center Tage Thompson to share a few words. Thompson’s had a fabulous start to the season, and their interaction was friendly. The video of the two stars talking went viral, but most people just thought that Bergeron praised Thompson with compliments on his season.
But as it turns out, it was way more than that.
Tage Thompson’s wife, Rachel, had a cancerous mass removed from her right leg in 2019. As the Bruins and Sabres celebrated Hockey Fights Cancer Night this weekend, Bergeron approached Thompson and asked how his wife was doing today.
For Bergeron to remember Thompson’s wife’s treatments, and ask about it, is such a great gesture, and Thompson appreciated it.
“It’s big,” Thompson told The Buffalo News. “Obviously, he didn’t have to say anything. He kind of went out of his way to check on her and ask how she’s doing. It’s just the kind of guy he. He’s just a genuine guy, cares about other people.”
Thompson’s wife is doing well and has been cancer-free in every bone scan since the surgery.
“His wife was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago and I think she was cancer-free now. So I was just saying that I was thinking of her and happy for them,” said Bergeron to Boston Hockey Now. “I wasn’t sure that she was cancer-free, and he said that [to me that she was cancer-free] so I was super happy for him, for her and for their family. It was cool.”
