Wayne Gretzky is the GOAT. He’s known as The Great One and never had a nickname been so correct. Wayne Gretzky broke almost every NHL record, and to this day, despite him playing his last game back in 1999, many are still unbroken and will be for many years.
Gretzky was a talent that we’ll probably never see again. In his debut year in the NHL with the Oilers, he scored 137 points, and that was just the beginning. Gretzky scored 215 points as most in a single season, and retired with 894 goals and 2 857 points in 1 487 games. But Gretzky wasn’t the best in everything.
Although he was a great player, he wasn’t the most physical player. Gretzky had a famous fight against Neal Broten in 1982, and it’s still brought up once in a while. Last season, as Gretzky was on TV as an analyst for TNT, NBA great Charles Barkley was in the studio, mocking The Great One for losing a fight to a guy with a perm.
We have to be honest here. The fight was terrible, and even Gretzky thinks so. He even ranks it as the worst fight in NHL history.
When joining Bleacher Report for a “Ask me Anything” session, he got asked about his thoughts on losing a fight against a guy with a perm, and he responded hilariously.
“I had a perm too – so two guys. The fight was actually really silly. It’s something he and I can laugh about. If you’re gonna rate fights, it was probably rated the worst fight in the history of the NHL,” he said.
And it’s hard to disagree with him. Just take a look; it isn’t beautiful:
