After playing in the NHL since 2005, for more than 1 100 games, and scoring more than 1 400 points, you’d imagine there are not many things Sidney Crosby can do for the first time. He’s broken all kinds of records and has pretty much done it all.
But last night, he did something for the very first time. In the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home opener against the Arizona Coyotes, Sid the Kid opened the season by scoring just 1:22 seconds into the first period. Jake Guentzel beat out an icing call and fed Crosby, who beat Coyotes goalie Karel Vejmelka to make it 1-0.
What’s so special about the goal?
During 18 seasons in the NHL, Sidney Crosby had never opened the season scoring for the Penguins. It’s a first time for everything, and the goal was just the beginning for the Penguins, who completely dominated the Coyotes in the first period. Crosby also had two assists in the game that ended 6-2. Crosby is off to a flying start in the new season, but he also drew some attention for other things than his points in the game.

With 7:57 played in the third period, Sid was skating out of the offensive zone, but he wasn’t left alone by Arizona defenseman Troy Stecher. Crosby got fed up by not being able to skate freely and responded by chopping Stecher on the leg. Crosby got a two-minute minor penalty for slashing, but some fans even suggested that he should’ve been called doubled for the situation.
”That sems like a perfect example of a double call for me. Interference / embellishment,” one fan said.
Some also suggest that Crosby gets away with things like that just because he’s Sidney Crosby.
”If Wilson did this it would be WWIII,” said one fan.
”That’s two games for Marchand,” said another.
