Johnny Gaudreau opens up on thoughts of his former team Calgary Flames, and he just couldn’t care less.
It’s been some massive changes in the Calgary Flames roster this summer, and perhaps most noticeable is the departure of Johnny Gaudreau. Johnny Hockey scored 115 points last season and has been of the league’s best forwards for the past five years.
This summer, he became an unrestricted free agent, and the world of hockey was absolutely in shock as he chose Columbus Blue Jackets as his new team. A handful of teams were interested in Gaudreau, putting some very lucrative contracts on the table, but he unexpectedly chose the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Flames also lost star player Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers this summer. Still, they added star quality in the form of Jonathan Huberdeau and Tyler Toffoli earlier this year.
Johnny Gaudreau has spent his entire NHL career at the Flames, so you wouldn’t be surprised if some sentimentality was involved as the new season is coming closer. But that’s not the case at all.
Instead, Johnny Hockey has admitted that he couldn’t care less about his former team and reveals he isn’t keeping a close eye on what’s going on in his former hometown.
“When I say I love Calgary, it’s the city,” Gaudreau said to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.
“Now that I’m on Columbus, I couldn’t care less what they do as a team. I obviously want to beat them. But as a city, the fans, the organization, the way they treated me, I always loved it there. It was a great place to play for the nine years. Once I left, I didn’t care anymore about the team.”
