Going into the series opener between the Rangers and the Penguins, few people would have bet that Louis Domingue would be the big hero. He had only one appearance in the playoffs before last night’s game, had only played four NHL games in the previous three seasons, and got a spot at the bench just because the Pens’ No.1 goalie Tristan Jerry is injured.
During the game, which ended 3-3 in regulation, Domingue took place in the stands because the bench was crowded. Midway through the second overtime period, the referees approached him, saying he should get ready to enter the ice. Domingue told reporters that he thought it was a joke, and during the game, he even ate a big meal. That’s how much he didn’t expect to play.
“Spicy pork and broccoli,” he said. “It’s not great. … I needed something in my belly.”
Domingue replaced Casey DeSmith, who got injured after saving 48 shots, and Domingue made 17 saves as Pittsburgh won Game 1 after an Evgeni Malkin goal in the third overtime.
Although Malkin got the game-winner, the big hero of the night was Louis Domingue.
“It’s crazy, but I guess that’s my life, and that’s hockey,” Domingue said.
