Slap Shot premiered in 1977, and 45 years later, it is still considered one of the greatest sports movies of all time. It may not have been an instant classic, but the movie became more and more popular over the years, and it’s still a must-watch for every hockey fan out there.
Even to this day, Slap Shot is considered the very best hockey movie of all time by many. But it’s not just hockey fans who love the movie. Even coaches and staff members of the NHL love it.
Just ask Brian Burke, a former General Manager for the Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks, and Toronto Maple Leafs, who’s now President of Hockey Operations in Pittsburgh.
On June 6, 2007, Burke was in the Anaheim Ducks organization, and they were just seconds away from clinching the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Burke stood next to Joe Trotta, the club’s video coordinator, who knew just how big of a fan of Slap Shot Burke was.
Burke was waiting for the final buzzer when Trotta said –” The Chiefs have won the championship of the Federal League.”
He, of course, did in the same way as Jim Carr had done in the movie. Brian Burke was just seconds away from the perhaps happiest moment of his hockey career, but the awesome Slap Shot reference made him double over in laughter, according to the reports.
