The Battle of Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames marked the return of the NHL.
But things started off on a more emotional note, as the teams honored the late Edmonton player Colby Cave, who tragically passed away in April.
Colby Cave had an emergency surgery to remove a colloid cyst, which was causing pressure on his brain. Shortly afterwards, he was placed in a medically induced coma and passed away because of a brain bleed, 25 years of age.
Before the game between the Oilers and Flames last night, a touching tribute was broadcasted on the big screen in Rogers Place. Players of both teams was visibly emotional.
During training camp, the Oilers paid tribute to the Cave family being in attendance at the facility.
The team split into two, with players wearing Cave’s number 12 for a scrimmage. The NHL organization later auctioned off the jerseys, with proceedings going to the Colby Cave Memorial Fund.
