Canada and the rest of the hockey world stood still exactly 10 years ago. Feb. 28 2010 marks the day of the gold-medal game of the Winter olympics hockey tournament in Vancouver.
It ended with super star Sidney Crosby scoring his now unforgettable goal in overtime to lead Canada past the United States 3-2.
The canadiens held a 2-0 lead in the second period before the US got one back. The packed Rogers Arena was only seconds from going nuts closing in on the final horn to sound, but with seconds left of the game, Zack Parise scored to tie the game forcing over time.
It didn’t take long before Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla set up an attack leading up to the Penguins star goal, with an entire nation going absolutely wild.
“We had to turn the pageย prettyย quick. When they score that late, you don’t have a lot of timeย toย think about it. Weย hadย a pretty solid group there when it came to leadership and the poise that everyone showed. That’s always something I’ll remember.”, Crosby told the Canadian Press.
Play-by-play announcer for the game Chris Cuthbert, working the game together with Ray Ferraro, remembers the insane ending to the game which for many is seen as the most iconic Canadian sports moment in history.
“It’s the biggest game I’ll ever call. The tension in the building was like none other I’ll ever be in.”, said Cuthbert to the Canadian Press.
