Zdeno Chara is a classy guy. Despite not stepping down from taking a fight or playing pretty rough, the Bruins’ captain has shown that sportsmanship goes a long way plenty of times.
Now, Chara’s done it again.
A week ago, Chara put a nasty cross-check to the throat of Brendan Gallagher. The situation earned both Chara and Gallagher minor penalties, but afterwards Chara got another one, landing a $5000 dollar fine but not getting suspended.
It was a dangerous play, especially considering the over one-foot height difference between the two.
However, with a couple of days of thinking about the incident, Chara showed great sportsmanship towards the Original Six rival player.
Brendan Gallagher says that Chara called him and apologized for the cross-check, which was a greatly appreciated gesture.
“I can forgive him,” Gallagher said Tuesday. “Doesn’t mean I’m going to play any different or he’s going to play any different. Still look forward to battling against him. But it was a situation where he reached out and called and obviously felt bad.”
But Gallagher isn’t the only one Chara’s been apologizing to through the years.
Via Twitter, former NHL player Ryan Callahan tells the story about Chara calling him back in 2011 when a blistering slap shot from the Bruins captain broke Callahans leg.
