Jonathan Toews celebrated his 800th career point last night against the Winnipeg Jets. Also, the Chicago star clipped Blake Wheeler with a high hit to the head.
Prior to last nights game against the Jets, Jonathan Toews needed one point to reach the milestone of 800 career points in the NHL, and it didn’t take long before it was done.
15 seconds into the game, Toews recorded an assist on Dominik Kubalik, recording his 800th career point in his hometown of Winnipeg.
Kubalik, a seventh-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft for the Blackhawks, now leads all rookies with 22 goals this season. He also became the NHL’s ninth rookie in the last 30 years to score in the opening 15 seconds of a regular-season game, according to NHL.com.
The Jets later scored five straight goals with forward Kyle Connor being involved in three of them, scoring two goals and recording one assist.
Even though Jonathan Toews got to celebrate his 800th career point, he also went to the spotlight for a hit on Blake Wheeler.
Late in the third period, with Chicago trailing by two goals, Toews raced for the puck in the offensive zone. In the same situation, he crossed the skating route of Wheeler, hitting him high in the head.
Toews received a two minute interference penalty on the play with Blake Wheeler leaving for a checkup in the locker room.
Speaking after the game however, Wheeler wasn’t to concerned about the hit.
“I think Toews was just trying to get position there,” Wheeler said according to the National Post. “He was just trying to cut me off and take away my speed. It was going to be a 50-50 puck and he, unfortunately, caught me. I don’t think there was any intent there. They’re trying to tie the game. He’s trying to get in that battle and that corner. It’s just one of those plays that happens sometimes.”
