Brett Hull said the funniest thing to rookie after he missed a shot

When Wayne Gretzky was asked who the funniest guy he ever played with was, he instantly said Brett Hull. And this story—about Hull in a two-on-one with a rookie in training camp—definitely proves it.

Brett Hull is a true legend of the game. He scored 741 goals during his iconic career, ranking him fifth in NHL history. He’s also one of only five players to score 50 goals in 50 games—and just so happened to win two Stanley Cups along the way.

Known for his elite goal-scoring, Brett Hull could do it all on the ice. He was a complete machine, and his 86-goal season in 1990-91 remains the third-highest single-season total in NHL history, trailing only Wayne Gretzky.

But Hull wasn’t just one of the best players of his generation—he was a real character, too. When Gretzky appeared on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast last year, he was asked about the funniest teammate he ever had. Without hesitation, he named Brett Hull—and this story certainly proves why.

Brett Hull’s hilarious words

Olivier Latendresse never played an NHL game, but he attended an NHL training camp. And in one scrimmage, he found himself in a prime scoring opportunity—on a two-on-one with none other than Brett Hull.
“So I’m in training camp, and we’re playing a game, and I go on a two-on-one with Brett Hull,” he said on The Hockey Think Tank podcast. “He’s open, right in one-timer position at the blue line. I see his stick up, and I’m a pretty good passer. At least, I think I’m a pretty good passer.”

But understandably, the defenseman was locked in on Brett Hull.
“The D-man goes straight to Hull. You know, he’s thinking, ‘I don’t care if I let this kid shoot.’ So I wait, I wait, I try to pass it to Hull, but I can’t. I end up shooting—right into the goalie’s chest. There’s a whistle, I skate into the corner, and Hull skates over.
“He goes, ‘Hey, kid. How many goals do you have in the NHL?’ I say, ‘Zero.’ And he goes, ‘I have 750. Pass it across, please.’”
