Ilya Sorokin scored a goalie goal last week in the Islanders’ 7-4 win over the Predators—and he didn’t wait long to take a jab at Igor Shesterkin. Now, the Rangers’ superstar goalie has fired back with a hilarious response, leaving everyone laughing.
Back in the 2023 NHL All-Star Skills Competition, Sorokin attempted to shoot pucks the length of the ice in a goalie goal challenge, but things didn’t go as planned. His best friend, Igor Shesterkin, wasted no time joking that he would’ve done better. But on Saturday, Sorokin got the last laugh when he officially joined the short list of NHL goalies to score.
During the Islanders’ game against the Predators, Steven Stamkos misfired on a pass to Brady Skjei, sending the puck slowly sliding down the ice and into an empty net.
Igor Shesterkin’s hilarious response
Since Sorokin had made the last Islanders touch with a save on Jonathan Marchessault just moments earlier, he was credited with his first career goal. And postgame, he couldn’t resist a playful jab at Shesterkin.
“I knew I’d do it before Igor,” Sorokin said, laughing.
On Monday, the two friends faced off, and this time, Shesterkin got the last laugh. He posted a shutout as the Rangers cruised to a 4-0 win, and when asked about Sorokin’s milestone, he delivered a classic deadpan response.
“It’s not a goal,” Shesterkin said simply, referring to the fact that Sorokin hadn’t actually shot the puck into the net—he had just been the last to touch it.
