The 2025 NHL Stadium Series game carried major playoff implications, with the Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings entering the matchup tied in points. Kane scored one of Detroit’s three goals in front of the second-largest crowd in NHL history. But what really stood out was something he’s not exactly known for.
Kane, one of the greatest goal-scorers of his generation, has never been famous for his defensive play. Blocking shots isn’t exactly in his repertoire, but in a crucial moment, he did just that. And Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan couldn’t resist poking fun at him.

With Kane mic’d up, a viral video captured McLellan’s hilarious chirp.
“Hey, did you block one? Is that what you were chirping about? How did that happen?” McLellan asked.
Kane, proving his case, pointed to a mark on his body.
“You got a Sharpie in your pocket?” McLellan shot back.
Kane responded by pointing at the black paint under his eyes, laughing at his coach’s playful jab.
